This comment reflects my opinion about the upcoming compulsory gap year for German students after having finished school. Many high school graduates are following the British trend of taking a gap year. Some want to gain experience in the “real world”, others are unsure of what they want to do. To take a gap year has many advantages.

At first, let me begin by mentioning some positive aspects of taking a gap year. There are many positive things like, travel into a foreign country to gain experience and maybe this will make you more independent. You can moreover improve a foreign language and try other things as well, e.g. different jobs. Apart from that, you can do a practical training or you go working full time to save up for college costs. These things are really great benefits for a gap year, but it doesn't always have benefits, because if you fail to establish a clear plan this can be a terrible experience for you, for example, if you want to travel into foreign country it could be very expensive, or you have problems with the foreign language. It could also be a problem to find friends, in other cases you may lose your studies out of sight, if you work and earn money. For people who know what they want to do, it can be quite annoying, because it would only delay it.

To put it all in a nutshell, it’s a quite good idea, in spite of the fact that people are thus only delays in their plans. I think most people would certainly help it to find there way, because some students want to travel, gain some experience or are unsure what they want to do.
